What Nobody Tells You About Long-Term Sobriety

Twenty years alcohol-free, Alysse Bryson has learned that life doesn't become problem-free... the problems just get “classier.”

What do you imagine when you picture someone 20 years sober?

Surely by then they've figured everything out, right?

No cravings. No bad habits. No messy emotions. Just green juice, inner peace and perfect boundaries.

Yeah... apparently not.

When Alysse Bryson joined us on Sober & Lit, she gave us a phrase I immediately loved:

“Classier problems.”

Alysse is the founder and publisher of The Sober Curator, a media platform devoted to sober pop culture, entertainment and lifestyle. She's also been sober for more than 20 years. Pasted markdown

And her perspective on what happens AFTER you stop drinking is something more women need to hear.

First, Life Really Did Get Better

When Alysse stopped drinking, some benefits came quickly.

She lost weight. Her skin cleared up. She had more money. Her career took off.

Great!

But then...

She became a workaholic.

She shopped.

Dating brought its own adventures.

New issues popped up like a game of whack-a-mole. Pasted markdown

I laughed because I KNOW this game.

For me it has looked like:

Why am I watching so much TV?

Why am I eating all this sugar?

Wait... am I seriously playing solitaire for THREE HOURS?

Whack.

Whack.

Whack.

The difference today?

I notice.

And I trust myself to do something about it.

Sobriety Doesn't Remove Being Human

This is such an important expectation shift.

Getting alcohol-free doesn't mean you'll never experience anxiety, loneliness, grief, stress, relationship problems or insecurity again.

It means alcohol isn't making all those things harder.

Alysse describes how, when she drank, she used alcohol specifically so she wouldn't have to feel uncomfortable feelings. Today she can still feel awkward, nervous or uncomfortable... but she has tools to move through those experiences. Pasted markdown

That is freedom.

Not a perfect life.

A life you can actually be present for.

You Might Not Be Dreaming Big Enough

This was my favorite part.

Alysse said if she could go back and speak to herself at 30 days sober, she couldn't possibly explain how big her life would become.

She wouldn't have believed it.

Not because everything went according to plan.

Quite the opposite.

Some of the things she thought she desperately wanted never happened... and their absence made room for something bigger. Pasted markdown

How beautiful is that?

Sobriety Has Changed Too

When Alysse got sober, there was no Instagram sobriety community.

No TikTok.

No sober podcasts.

She remembers finding only a few relevant books in the bookstore.

Today she's helping create something that barely existed then: sober pop culture.

She's watched sobriety move from anonymity and stigma toward people talking openly and proudly about alcohol-free living. Pasted markdown

And that matters.

Representation helps us imagine ourselves on the other side.

And Then Comes the Question: Now What?

Alysse described long-term sobriety almost like a video game.

At first, all she could focus on was not drinking.

Eventually came:

“Okay... now what?”

Another layer.

Another level.

Another reinvention.

And perhaps that's the best news of all.

Getting alcohol-free isn't the finish line.

It's not even about becoming really good at being sober.

It's about creating enough space to discover who you are... and who you still might become.

Because there will always be another layer.

Another level.

Another possibility.

Alcohol gets smaller.

And life gets bigger. 🧡
