What Happens to Your Sex Life When You Get Sober?

Alcohol may have made intimacy feel easier... but what happens when the filter comes off?

There's a part of becoming alcohol-free that women don't talk about nearly enough.

Sex.

For many women, alcohol wasn't only something we drank at dinner or with friends.

It was part of intimacy.

A glass of wine helped us relax. Feel sexy. Stop thinking about our stomach, thighs, age or whether we were "doing it right."

So when alcohol disappears, an uncomfortable question can appear:

"How am I supposed to do this sober?"

Was Alcohol Really Making Sex Better?

We tend to remember the brief window when alcohol made us feel relaxed, uninhibited or flirtatious.

But as Cindi Roberts, the Sober Sexpert, explains, that's not necessarily the whole story.

Alcohol is a depressant. That initial lift can be followed by fatigue, disconnection and reduced awareness of physical sensations.

Her own "window" for feeling frisky after wine became shorter and shorter. Miss the window and she might become tired, grouchy or simply fall asleep.

Which raises an interesting question:

Was alcohol improving intimacy... or were we romanticizing what it actually did?

When the Alcohol Filter Comes Off

One of the biggest intimacy blocks she hears from women is body insecurity.

Without alcohol, suddenly we may notice everything.

How do I look?

How does my body feel?

What is my partner thinking?

But perhaps that awareness isn't a problem to eliminate.

Maybe it's information.

Becoming alcohol-free can invite us to rediscover our bodies and notice what actually feels good now.

And here's the fascinating part:

What felt good when you were drinking might not feel good anymore.

Your partner can't know that unless you know it yourself.

Intimacy Is Bigger Than Sex

One of the most beautiful reframes is that intimacy and sex aren't the same thing.

She describes intimacy as having a kind and compassionate witness to your truest thoughts and feelings.

That can include your partner, but intimacy can also exist with a close friend... and with yourself.

Connection might mean touch, conversation, lying together, affection or simply feeling safe.

Removing the pressure for every intimate moment to lead to intercourse may actually create room for more connection.

What If Your Partner Still Drinks?

This can become another unexpected challenge.

You may discover that you don't like smelling or tasting alcohol on your partner's breath. Their behavior after drinking may feel different now that you're fully present.

That's where boundaries matter.

Your partner isn't a mind reader.

Cindi's advice throughout the episode is refreshingly simple:

Talk about it.

Tell them what you're experiencing.

Tell them what you need.

And don't expect someone who's been with you for 20 years to automatically know what feels good to you today.

Don't Blame Sobriety for Everything

If your libido changes after becoming alcohol-free, don't immediately conclude:

"Sobriety ruined my sex life."

Midlife women may simultaneously be experiencing stress, menopause, hormonal changes, thyroid issues, relationship changes, children leaving home or a hundred other life transitions.

Cindi encourages women to give themselves grace and, where appropriate, talk with their healthcare provider rather than assuming alcohol was the missing ingredient.

Maybe sober intimacy isn't about recreating who you were with wine.

Maybe it's an invitation to discover what you want now.

And maybe the question isn't:

"How do I get my old sex life back?"

Maybe it's:

"What if it could be different... and better?"
