Why Can't I Just Stop Drinking? What Finally Worked After AA, Willpower & Shame

For successful women who are tired of breaking promises to themselves about alcohol, there's another way to find freedom... without shame, labels, or waiting for rock bottom.

Have you ever looked in the mirror, exhausted and disappointed, and whispered, "Why can't I just stop drinking?"

Maybe you promised yourself you'd only have one glass of wine. Maybe you swore you'd take the week off. But somehow, you ended up right back where you started.

I know that feeling.

For years, I was capable and successful in so many areas of my life. I spent nearly two decades in the wine industry, raised my son as a single mom, and navigated major life changes.

Yet alcohol had become the one thing I couldn't seem to figure out.

I Tried AA, Willpower, and Shame

When I wanted to change my drinking, I tried several approaches.

I attended AA meetings, but I didn't feel like I belonged. AA has helped countless people, and I respect that. It simply wasn't the right fit for me.

Then I tried willpower.

I'd wake up determined to stop drinking. Monday would go well. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday too.

Then Friday arrived.

Suddenly, wine sounded like the reward I'd earned for surviving another stressful week.

And when I broke another promise to myself, the shame came rushing back.

I thought being harder on myself would finally make me change.

Instead, I drank for relief, felt ashamed, and wanted relief from the shame.

The Question That Changed My Relationship With Alcohol

My breakthrough began when I stopped asking, "How do I force myself to quit drinking?"

Instead, I asked, "Why do I want to drink?"

I had spent years believing wine helped me relax, celebrate, connect, and escape stress.

But was alcohol actually delivering those things?

Or was it creating new problems while temporarily distracting me from the old ones?

I started exploring my beliefs about drinking, learning about alcohol, and practicing self-compassion.

I also began asking a powerful question:

"What am I actually needing right now?"

Sometimes I needed rest. Sometimes connection. Sometimes relief from the pressure of trying to do everything perfectly.

And sometimes I simply needed to feel heard.

Pam's Story: From Daily Drinking to Freedom

One of my coaching clients, Pam, knew what it felt like to be trapped.

She drank daily to cope with stress. She'd tried rehab, meetings, and self-help books, but still hadn't found the lasting change she wanted.

She was skeptical about coaching.

But she decided to try.

Over 90 days, Pam began questioning her beliefs about alcohol, rebuilding her self-trust, and making changes beyond drinking.

She left a toxic relationship and began creating a life she wanted to live.

In her words:

"I am finally free from alcohol. It has become small and irrelevant in my life."

Pam's experience is personal, not a guarantee of anyone else's results. But it demonstrates that previous attempts don't have to define your future.

Why Self-Compassion Matters More Than Self-Criticism

When you're disappointed in yourself, it's tempting to say, "I should know better."

But shame can make you want to hide.

Curiosity opens the door to learning.

Instead of asking what's wrong with you, try asking what happened, what you needed, and what might help next time.

Self-compassion doesn't mean ignoring the consequences of drinking. It means being kind enough to yourself to look at them honestly.

Three Questions to Begin Your Alcohol Freedom Journey

  1. What do I believe alcohol gives me?
  2. Is alcohol actually delivering those benefits, including the next morning?
  3. What might become possible if alcohol took up less space in my life?

You don't have to have all the answers today.

You just have to become willing to ask different questions.

Your Next Chapter Can Begin Now

I've been alcohol-free since May 2019, and one of the greatest gifts is no longer spending my days negotiating with myself about wine.

That's the freedom I want other women to discover.

If you're ready for support, my 90-day Alcohol Freedom Academy begins again in mid-November, with coaching, education, and a compassionate community.

Listen to Episode 147 of Sober & Lit: Why Can't I Just Stop Drinking? What Finally Worked After AA, Willpower & Shame.

Because rock bottom is optional... and freedom feels better than wine ever tasted.
