Is It Menopause… or Alcohol?
Why Midlife Women Deserve More Compassion, Not More Shame
Many women reach midlife convinced they've somehow lost their willpower. The nightly wine habit grows stronger, sleep worsens, anxiety increases, and cravings feel impossible to ignore.
But what if nothing is "wrong" with you?
On this episode of Sober & Lit, menopause coach and registered nurse Kathleen McDermott explains that hormonal changes, nervous system dysregulation, stress, and alcohol often collide during perimenopause and menopause.
Hormones Change the Game
Declining estrogen and progesterone can influence sleep, mood, emotional regulation, and stress tolerance. At the same time, many women are juggling careers, aging parents, relationships, and caregiving responsibilities.
It's the perfect storm.
Alcohol Isn't Solving the Problem
While alcohol may feel like relief in the moment, it can worsen hot flashes, disrupt sleep, increase anxiety, and make emotional regulation even harder.
Many women discover that removing alcohol actually improves symptoms they once blamed entirely on menopause.
Curiosity Beats Judgment
Instead of asking, "What's wrong with me?" ask, "What is my body trying to tell me?"
That shift from shame to curiosity creates space for lasting change.
Small Changes Matter
You don't have to overhaul your life overnight.
Try:
- Prioritizing protein and hydration
- Getting outside for a short walk
- Practicing stress reduction
- Improving sleep habits
- Building supportive routines
- Exploring an alcohol-free lifestyle
Advocate for Yourself
Kathleen also encourages women to educate themselves about menopause and ask questions about hormone replacement therapy, bone health, cardiovascular risk, and overall wellness.
Knowledge is empowering.
Your Midlife Chapter Can Be Your Strongest
Perhaps the most important takeaway? You are not broken.
The cravings, overwhelm, and emotional ups and downs many women experience aren't signs of failure—they're invitations to care for yourself differently.
An alcohol-free lifestyle, combined with self-compassion and healthy habits, can become one of the greatest gifts you give yourself in midlife.
